Remedies for Dry, Chapped Lips

Do you struggle with dry, cracked lips? Every winter, I have a consistent problem with my lips cracking and peeling. It seems like no matter what preventative measures I take, it’s never successful. I have tried many different products and while some seem to work while the product is on my lips, my lips never fully “heal.”

Dry winter air can wreak havoc on skin and lips. Add moisture and help them heal by following these 8 remedies for dry, chapped lips.

Here are a few tips to keep your lips nice and hydrated:

Drink plenty of water.

Dry lips and skin could be caused because you are not drinking enough water. Making sure you are hydrated is the first step to helping dry lips.

Avoid licking your lips

I know it is tempting to do when your lips feel dry, but this will only make it worse.

Gently exfoliate

You can purchase a lip exfoliant, or you can choose to make your own. I make my own by simply mixing 2 parts coconut oil with one part sugar. It is simple, but it gets the job done. You can also use sugar and honey to make a lip exfoliant. Gently rub the mixture on your lips in circular motions then wipe away with a washcloth. You don’t want to do this more than once or twice a week.

Apply a lip product throughout the day and before bed

Applying product throughout the day will help protect your lips and add moisture. It is best to avoid products with ingredients like phenol, salicylic acid and menthol because these tend to make lips more dry.

Use a humidifier

Consider using a humidifier especially in the winter months. If you are noticing your lips and skin feel dry, use a humidifier to add some moisture back into the air.

Avoid using drying lip products.

I love wearing a liquid lipstick, but they are way too drying for my lips during the winter. Opt for a cream lipstick instead.

Protect your lips for the elements

If you plan on being in the sun, wind or cold use a lip balm with at least SPF30 to protect your lips.

Lastly, my best tip is to try Aquaphor as on your lips. This is a product I swear by for diaper rash, but it also does wonders for dry skin and lips. This product has been a game changer, especially during the winter months! This is the only thing that I have applied to my lips that makes them feel healed and moisturized even after it has worn off my lips.
